Keeping Busy

Posted by Bev Darby, Rock n Spheres on 7th Mar 2020

Today has been an odds and ends kind of day.  Most of the morning was spent doing a major muck out on one of the 24" saws.  Some how I had managed to bend the blade that was on it.  Alan dislikes doing much with the saws particularly when there is mineral oil in it.  I do have an ever clean system to circulate the oil once it pumps it out, unfortunately and doesn't hold all the oil.  These saws are almost large enough for me to sleep in. LOL.

I did get a sphere completed of the new Shattuckite from Mexico.  Stunning if I do say so myself.  It does have 2 small fracture lines and a small chip but the vibrant colors more than make up for it.

My first Lion's Skin sphere is in the rough grind stage.  It should be impressive if I can keep it round.  The golden tiger eye portions are soft, the quartz is very hard.  It will be a challenge but well worth it if it turns out anything like the end cuts look.

Also in the rough grind stage is a chrysocolla from Mexico.  I think I really am drawn to the blues.  Every time I see a boulder of a blue rock, it has to come home with me.

I have started working on the Marra Mamba sphere that has been giving me issues.  The previous 2 from this boulder were straightforward in working them.  This one is like a teenage girl, giving me grief at every turn. I am not sure I will win this one.

The saws have been busy too.  Our oldest 24" is cutting another cube of Lion's Skin.  The new blade 24" saw has a massive chunk of Lemon Chrysoprase from Australia in it.  I am hoping to get 3 spheres out of this piece.  There is a Swiss Coffee cube going through the 26 cuts to make it kind of round.

The Swiss Coffee is a new material out of China.  It has the delicious swirls of Polish Flint but does not seem to be as hard.  Also it is more of a coffee color instead of grey.
