Snow Globes

When growing up, the family would get a snow globe every year just before the holidays.  Not one of the fancy ones they sell today, just the little plastic ones that never keep their water.  I could spend hours giving the thing a shake and watching the scenery in this other world.

I do believe this is why I love to make spheres in general, but also spheres out of material that you can see into.  Maybe that is my fascination with the Argentinian Blue Calcite.  I have been lately cutting into my stash of Fluorite.  This is also some of that material.

I just finished grinding the corners off of a pale green Chinese Fluorite.  It has the qualities of a snow globe.  Not many inclusions, only a small band of opaque white material.  This is the type of material that feels like you could walk into it and get lost.  I can't wait to see it finished.

The 24" saw has an 81# piece of Argentinian Fluorite in it.  This material is also crystal clear with color bands of green and yellow.  Not near enough to be cubes yet, I hope to get at least one today.

I suppose with the holidays around the corner, I am nostalgic for the past.
