Indian Paint Rock Sphere, California, 2.6 inches in diameter.
Closed to collecting in 1992, Indian Paint Rock can only be found in old collections. Officially a jasper, it has more of the appearance of sandstone. The colors of red (iron) and black (manganese) have been drawn in to the rock along fissures by capillary action. This Jasper is only found in Death Valley.
It has been 10 years since I was able to score this material! It does not take a polish but is more like a sandstone. I love the patterns. This sphere has rough areas.
